In the UEFA EURO 2024 final played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Mikel Oyarzabal’s goal in the last minutes gave Spain a 2-1 victory over England and made them European Champions for the fourth time.
Spain made a fast start to the tournament by defeating Croatia, Italy and Albania in the group stage. In the qualifying rounds, they reached the final after beating Georgia, Germany and France.
While the first half of the match was balanced, Spain took the lead with Nico Williams’ goal right at the beginning of the second half. England equalised with Cole Palmer’s goal three minutes after he entered the game. However, four minutes before the end of the match, Oyarzabal, who converted Marc Cucurella’s centre into a goal, dashed the hopes of the English and brought victory to Spain.
England, under the management of Gareth Southgate, reached the final by eliminating Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands during the tournament. In the final, England, who fought until the last minute against Spain, could not utilise the opportunities they found with Declan Rice and Marc Guehi. Rice’s shot was saved by Unai Simon, while Guehi’s header was cleared off the line by Dani Olmo.
With this win, Spain became the European Champion for the fourth time after 1964, 2008 and 2012. Spain, which drew attention with its superior performance throughout the match, won all six matches it played on its championship journey, scoring 13 goals and conceding only three goals.
