In a significant diplomatic engagement, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed Israeli National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi, Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, and a senior Israeli interagency delegation to the White House today for a meeting of the U.S.-Israel Strategic Consultative Group. Senior representatives from both nations’ foreign policy, defense, and intelligence agencies participated in the discussions.
The meeting primarily focused on countering threats posed by Iran to Israel and the broader Middle East region. Mr. Sullivan reiterated President Biden’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, particularly in light of the ongoing attacks by Lebanese Hezbollah. “Israel has every right to defend itself against these attacks,” Mr. Sullivan stated, emphasizing U.S. support for a diplomatic resolution that would enable Israeli and Lebanese families to return to their homes safely and securely.
In addition to regional security concerns, the parties discussed developments regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Both sides explored mutual coordination on a series of measures to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.
The situation in Gaza was also a key topic of conversation. Progress towards a ceasefire and a hostage release deal was reviewed, with the Israeli side expressing full support for the agreement as outlined by President Biden and endorsed by the UN Security Council, G7, and countries around the world.
