Turkey Ranks 18th in World Population

ANKARA (IGFA) – The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) updated global population data in honor of World Population Day 2024. According to United Nations (UN) population estimates for 2023, the most populous country is India with 1,428,627,663 people, followed by China with 1,425,671,352 people, and the United States with 339,996,563 people. These three countries account for 39.7% of the world’s total population.

Turkey, with a population of 85,372,377, ranks 18th in the world. Turkey constitutes 1.1% of the world’s total population.

Child Population Ratio: Highest and Lowest Countries

According to UN estimates, in 2023, the countries with the highest child population ratios were Niger and the Central African Republic, both at 55.5%. They were followed by Chad at 54.2% and Mali at 54.0%. The countries with the lowest child population ratios were South Korea at 13.9%, Japan at 14.1%, and Singapore at 14.2%. The global average child population ratio was 29.8%, while in Turkey, this ratio was 26.0%, below the global average. However, Turkey’s child population ratio was higher than that of European Union (EU) member countries.

Youth Population Ratio: Turkey Below World Average

According to UN estimates, in 2023, the country with the highest youth population ratio was Syria at 24.1%, followed by the Central African Republic and East Timor at 22.3%, and Eritrea at 22.1%. The country with the lowest youth population ratio was Ukraine at 6.8%, followed by Qatar at 7.6% and Monaco at 8.5%. The global average youth population ratio was 15.5%, while in Turkey, this ratio was 15.1%, just below the global average. Turkey’s youth population ratio was higher than that of EU member countries.

Elderly Population Ratio: Turkey Above World Average

According to UN estimates, in 2023, the country with the highest elderly population ratio was Monaco at 35.8%, followed by Japan at 30.1% and Italy at 24.5%. The countries with the lowest elderly population ratios were Qatar at 1.6%, Uganda at 1.7%, and Zambia at 1.8%. The global average elderly population ratio was 10.0%, while in Turkey, this ratio was 10.2%, slightly above the global average.
