10 Tips to Protect Your Lung Health in Summer

Do not go out at noon in extremely hot weather

Clean air is very important for both body and lung health. Especially in areas with high air pollution, it is useful to check the air quality before going out. If possible, it is more advantageous to go out early in the morning or late in the evening.

Avoid Tobacco Products and Passive Smoking

The negative effects of tobacco and tobacco products on lung health have been scientifically proven. This also includes electronic cigarettes. In addition, passive smoking is at least as harmful as active smoking. To protect lung health, it is important to stop smoking or avoid exposure to tobacco smoke.

Prevent Body Dehydration

Our body is made up of 70 per cent water and water is our most important source of life. During the summer months, it is important to consume enough water to maintain your lung health and support your overall health. As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses (about 2 litres) of water a day. Your water requirement may vary according to your body weight; 30 – 35 ml of water consumption per kilogramme may be recommended. For example, for a person weighing 70 kg, this means about 2.1 – 2.45 litres of water.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise increases your lung capacity and strengthens your respiratory muscles. You can prefer outdoor activities such as walking or swimming, especially in the fresh air.

Protect yourself from allergens and pollen

Take measures to protect yourself from pollen, dust and other allergens. It may be useful to use an air purifier at home. Staying indoors during periods of high pollen density, using pollen masks and changing clothes after coming from outside are effective methods.

Eat a Healthy Diet

It is important to have a healthy and balanced diet to protect your lung health. Nutrients such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids, beta-carotene support lung health. It is also beneficial to consume natural anti-inflammatory foods such as garlic, onion and green tea.

Check the Filters of Your Air Conditioners

Clean the filters of your air conditioners regularly and have the ventilation systems maintained. Try to balance the humidity level of the room while using the air conditioner.

Protect from Dust and Chemicals

Avoid chemical cleaners and use natural products when cleaning at home. If you work in dusty environments, do not neglect to wear a mask.

Avoid Extreme Heat

Avoid spending too much time outdoors in very hot and humid weather. Such weather conditions can increase respiratory problems.

Do not neglect your regular medical check-ups, especially if you have a respiratory illness.
